The story begins with, "the bees came the summer of 1964, the summer I turned fourteen and my life went spinning off to a whole new orbit." Sue Monk Kidd captures the restlessness of a teenage girl searching for the love of a mother, she longs for love. She has a need to know the truth but fears it at the same time. And most of all, Lily unknowingly wants to earn her own forgiveness. Lily's unloving father, T. Ray ("I call him T. Ray because Daddy never suited him") is harsh and evil, and because you are reading the story through Lily's point of view, you think he has always been this way until the end of the story where Lily explains that she never thought about what her mother leaving did to him. She had always thought she was the only one who hurt over it, but realizes that T. Ray loved her mother, and she took his love away. One day Lily and Rosaleen, Lily's black, loving housemaid, go into town so Rosaleen can register to vote, but they stumble across three racist men who, when Rosaleen defends herself, take violent action against her, resulting in Rosaleen and Lily getting arrested. T. Ray bails Lily out and takes her home, where he tells her something she cannot live with (I won't ruin it, so I won't tell you!) she brakes Rosaleen out of hospital and they run away to Tibourn, where they find the Boatwright sisters, May, June and August. Now, at fourteen Lily is very bright and does not trust herself or these women with the truth so she tells them a pack of lies to gain their trust. It is August who in the one who teaches Lily how to forgive herself and her mother.
I finnished reading "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd this morning and it lived up to my every expectation. I watched the film a week or so ago and found out it was based on a book, I immediantly wanted to read it and luckily found it at a charity shop. Enjoying the film, I expected to enjoy the book just as much and I did.
